Occasionally, very occasionally, you stumble across something so unexpected and fundamental it takes your breath away.

We were asked by Grand Lodge to trace the Masonic History of  three Lodge Members from the early years of the Lodge, while reading though the early Minutes we found an entry dated 1877, thanking the Forres and Nairn Gazette for the excellent article giving details of the Lodges Centenary Celebrations.

This reference raised our curiosity and in consequence we contacted the Forres Gazette to enquire if they still had archive copies of the Forres Gazette from that period.

The Gazette informed us that they regretted that they no longer kept such archives, but suggested we contact the Moray Archive Centre.

This we did and while scanning through an ancient microfiche which looked like it dated back to 1877 itself, we found the desired article in the 14 February 1877 edition of the Gazette. The detail appertaining to the early Lodge history is staggeringly detailed, but from our perspective the “Jewel in the Crown”, was the article included the names and installation dates of every RWM for the Lodges first 100 years.

I have posted a copy of the article on the following pages:-
